fleurs du mal...

So, he is back. My favourite designer Erdem. I have only just got around to checking out his fall 2011 collection which was showcased 21st February in London.
This is a collection which surprised me, after reading the inspiration and theme behind the designs however, it then all seemed to make sense.

It is a wonderful theme. His muse - an artists wife who cracks and tears apart her husbands canvases only to remake them into pieces of clothing. Upon reading this the surprising use of patch work, plunging necklines an cut out detailing all seem beautifully relevant and symbolic.

I love the darker palette of this collection and the slight skew on delicacy and accuracy. Though it must be said that his signature lace overlay is still happily present.

Below are some of my favourite pieces from the collection. Particularly the maxi dresses and shift dresses with lace overlay! Once again Erdem, I applaud you!!

And here, my favourite two dresses! The difference in fabric weight and how the colours change in intensity... I can't help but fall in love.

Enjoy

The Want...

So as we all know Monday's can be pretty blue, it's one of those days where the weekend seems like a distant memory, when all we really want to do is get back into bed, huddle away in the duvet whilst drinking a cup of tea and eating a piece of toast! That was exactly the mood in which I was in today, though, as expected work and real life beckoned and I reluctantly succumbed.

However, whilst having my daily dose of style.com my eyes were treated to what I can only describe as a heavenly, if not perfect collection of gowns courtesy of the Elie Saab spring 2011 collection.

There is just something magical about these dresses! As a gal who prefers to wear dresses than jeans, and would happily wear a floor length dress every single day for the rest of my life, these dresses were exactly what I needed to indulge over.
Now I must face that tricky and ever too familiar hurdle that is reality. Yes, I may never own one of these beauties but I do get to look at them whenever I want (through the magic of the internet) ... they're only ever a click away.

Below I have pulled my favourites from style.com
Hope you enjoy.

Finishing on a dress that is a piece of craftsmanship in itself.

These dresses = my idea of heaven!

onwards and upwards....

I have spent this evening doing some more contextual research. I thought it would be a good idea to look at recent graduates from textiles and fashion design to see how they record the progression of their work and how they explain their themes to a wider audience. I can at times fall into the trap of assuming people are going to understand my project straight away, the more familiar I get with my work and development the easier it is to become complacent. So I thought it was time for a little more research, time away from the comforts of my own work. Quickly into doing my research I came across a graduate from De Montfort Uni in 2009 - her name is Beatrice K Newman, and her work is amazing. Instantly I was drawn to her work through her use of decorative patterns and luxury fabric. It is really interesting for me to see how different students explore ideas, how one single idea can lead to a collection of fabrics or garments. Mostly it is down to me being nosey, but I really could look through sketchbooks and samples all day long.

Here are some images of the wonderful works of Beatrice Newman.

In regards to my own work things are going ok at the moment. I have just had another 3 metres of jacquards designs woven, they are sitting happily in a box, steamed, pressed and interlocked. Although I have got a fair bit of fabric for this project I still feel asthough there is a lot more to explore. I want to translate texture through my jacquard, just like I have done in my velvet digital prints. I think a stint in the sketchbook and another moodboard could trigger and few more ideas. So off I shall go, more prep is the key.

I will be posting photographsthis week, probably Friday. I think I'm going to lay everything out that I've done so far and see whether everything "flows", this should hopefully allow me to see major points that need addressing to make sure I am not over looking anything significant. So until Friday, bye for now.
